Welcome to our site!  I am Laurie Poppenheimer.  I teach fabulous fifth graders on the red hall at LES.  In my classroom, we will cover reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and social studies.  We're all about learning.  Come and join us on our journey to become successful readers and writers.

(To see weekly information, please click on  Assignments and Announcements.)

Daily reading at school and home cannot be emphasized enough.  If any student wants to improve and enhance his educational opportunities, he should read.  The more you read, the better you will be.

Our reading program is called "Making Meaning."  It includes a focus lesson with the teacher, opportunities to participate in group discussions, vocabulary study, and independent reading time.

Our  writing program is called "Being a Writer."  Students "read to write" and "write to read."  We will write about many different topics and share our writing pieces.  Grammar skills will be taught as part of our writing curriculum.

Social studies will be integrated through Language Arts.  The topics will be based on the mentor texts we are covering for the week.

Homework:  Students are asked as part of their morning procedures to copy homework into their agendas.  This is the student's responsibility.  We would also like your child to have a nightly reading time, as this will greatly enhance his/her academic growth.

Parent Portal:  To view your child's grades online, sign up for Parent Portal.  For security purposes, you must do this in person through the front office.

Remind: Sign up for announcements and messages. You will receive a no-reply text from Mrs. Pop.  This is especially helpful when reminding students about field trips, deadlines, and tests.  It will also alert you when graded papers are being sent home.  To sign up, text  @mckinnonp  to this number 81010.  That one number will allow you to receive texts from me as well as your switch teacher, Mrs. McKinnon.
