    ~Weekly Objectives (9/18-9/22)~

 

READING WORKSHOP: 

Unit 3: Questioning (Expository Nonfiction)

During this unit, the students use wondering and questioning to help them understand expository nonfiction texts. 

Week 3: Mentor Text - Animal Senses: How Animals See, Hear, Taste, Smell and Feel

Comprehension Focus -

  • use questioning to help make sense of texts
  • use schema to articulate all they think they know about a topic before they read
  • read independently

Social Development Focus -

  • develop the skill of explaining their thinking

 

WRITING WORKSHOP:

Unit 2: Personal Narrative

During this four-week unit, the students explore the genre of personal narrative and write about significant topics and events from their lives.

Weeks 1 & 2: Mentor Texts - Childtimes: A Three-Generation Memoir; The Moon and I

Writing Focus -

  • hear and discuss personal narratives
  • learn about a professional author's writing practice
  • generate writing ideas from their own lives
  • visualize sensory details
  • draft personal narratives, focusing on single, interesting events or topics from their own lives
  • explore transitional words or phrases

Social Development Focus -

  • build the writing community
  • listen respectfully to the thinking of others and share their own
  • express interest in and appreciation for one another's writing

 

WORD STUDY:

Vocabulary: We will have a vocabulary quiz every other Friday.  Students must be able to use the words in sentences.  Our next quiz will be Friday, September 29th.

Spelling: We will have a spelling test every other week.  Our next test will be Friday, September 22nd.
