    ~Weekly Objectives (9/17-9/21)~

 

READING WORKSHOP: 

Unit 3: Questioning

Expository Nonfiction - During this unit, the students use wondering and questioning to help them understand expository nonfiction texts as they continue an across-grades exploration of animal life.

Week One: 

Comprehension Focus:  

  • use wondering to help them make sese of text
  • use schema to articulate all they think they know about a topic before they read
  • read independently

Social Development Focus:

  • analyze why it is important to be respectful
  • develop the skill of explaining their thinking

 

WRITING WORKSHOP:

Unit 3: Personal Narrative

During this four-week unit, the students explore the genre of personal narrative and write about significant topics and events from their lives.

Week One:

Writing Focus: 

  • hear and discuss personal narratives
  • learn about a professional author's writing practice
  • generate writing ideas from their own lives
  • visualize sensory details
  • draft personal narratives, focusing on single, interesting events or topics from their own lives

Social Development Focus: 

  • build the writing community
  • listen respectfully to the thinking of others and share their own 

 

WORD STUDY:

Vocabulary: We will have a vocabulary quiz every other Friday.  Students must be able to use the words in sentences.  Our next test will be Friday, September 21st.

3. yearn - wish or long for something very strongly, especially something difficult to get

4. plead - beg; ask for something in a strong or serious way

5. experience - something you have done, seen, or taken part in

6. custom - something that has been done for a long time and has become widely accepted

7. dissimilar - not similar; not alike. If two things are dissimilar, they are different. 

8. focus - adjust the eyes to see something clearly; concentrate your attention or effort on something

9. function - purpose, role, or job

10. sensitive - sharp, quick, or alert; easily offended or hurt

11. critical - extremely important or absolutely necessary

12. obstacle - something that blocks or gets in your way

 

 Spelling: We will have a spelling test every other week.  Our next test will be Friday,  September 14th.

GRAMMAR:

Each week we will learn different grammar skills using a sentence from text.  Our next test will be Friday, September 14th.

This week's grammar focus is complex sentences.

  

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Each student needs to interview an adult about the events of September 11, 2001.  This was sent home this past Thursday, Sept. 6th and is due on Tuesday, Sept. 11th.
